May 21, 2020 - From the President’s Desk

Dear Wright State Family,

I know that each of you has been affected by this global pandemic, and I want you to know just how much I appreciate all of your hard work and the sacrifices you have made as we navigate these uncertain waters together.

I am writing today to update the campus community on our continuing efforts to mitigate our immense financial challenges. Wright State University, like many universities across the country, must take unprecedented steps in order to stabilize and ensure our future.

A confluence of declining enrollment projections and shrinking state support have left the university few choices but to pursue continued expense and workforce reductions so that Wright State can continue to serve the Dayton region and the state of Ohio.

As you may know, we are and will continue meeting with multiple campus constituencies as we work through this situation. Those meetings have included conversations with our three labor unions (Fraternal Order of Police, Teamsters, and AAUP-WSU) in an effort to clearly communicate the gravity of our financial situation and pursue common ground that might lead to financial compromises.

At this time, we are proposing mid-term bargaining with AAUP-WSU and FOP, while continuing conversations with the Teamsters. We are looking forward to constructive conversations and creative solutions as we work together with all of our valued campus partners.

As you’ve heard me say many times, we are all in this together and it will require all of us working together to preserve our future. Thank you all for being part of the solution.

Best wishes,

Sue
