PHY 112 - PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS - WINTER 2000

Textbook: Physics - Principles with Applications, Fifth Edition by Douglas C. Giancoli, 1998

Recitation: Each lecture class is followed by a recitation class on the following day. In recitation class you will work in small groups on the solutions to study guides which involve topics from the previous lecture class. Your recitation instructor will be available to answer questions. Before each recitation class, review the textbook readings for the previous lecture class and your lecture notes. Your recitation class grade will be based upon your attendance and effort during the recitation class. Your lowest three (3) recitation class scores will be dropped in computing your recitation class grade. Your completed study guides must be submitted at the same time as your weekly homework assignments.

Homework: Homework assignments and their due dates are listed in the schedule.

Weekly Assignments: Weekly assignments usually consist of the two study guides completed during the previous week and a homework assignment and are normally due at the start of your Tuesday recitation class (unless stated otherwise in the schedule). Your assignment should be neatly written and all pages should be stapled together so they do not become separated in the grading process. No late weekly assignments or parts of weekly assignments will be accepted. If you cannot be present, you may submit your weekly assignment before the start of your recitation class to a secretary in the Physics Dept. Office (#248 Fawcett). Weekly assignments should never be slid under office doors. Selected parts of each weekly assignment will be graded and returned to you. Show your work/reasoning to receive full credit for your solutions. Missing weekly assignments or parts of assignments will receive a score of zero. Your lowest two (2) weekly assignment scores will be dropped when computing your total weekly assignment grade.

Laboratory: Concurrent registration in, or previous completion of, PHY 102 is required. See Mr. William Wagner, Laboratory Director, (#239 F) about problems related to the laboratory class. The lab schedule and lists of pre-questions and post-questions are available at the physics lab website:

http://www.wright.edu/~tlisterm/ Solutions to weekly homework assignments, information on all aspects of the course, exam scores, and hyperlinks to useful web sites will be posted on the PHY 112 web pages on the instructor’s web site. You can access this site on-campus in the computer center and in the university library. You can access the site off-campus in most public libraries and using a home computer. No password is required. (The publisher’s web site for the textbook, which can be accessed through a hyperlink on this web site, contains useful supplementary materials, sample multiple-choice exam questions, and MCAT exam review materials.)

Examinations: Three hour-long, multiple-choice exams will be administered as listed in the schedule. The third hourly exam will be administered during the first hour of the scheduled final exam period. Questions will be based on the material in the assigned sections of the textbook, in the lectures, in the study guides, and in the homework assignments. The subject matter of each of these exams is listed according to the lecture class in which the topics are scheduled.
     You will receive a grade of zero for any scheduled exam that you miss. An optional hour-long make-up exam on the same material as the-- first two hourly exams will be administered during the second hour of the scheduled final exam period. Your score on this exam will replace one lower score (or one zero score) on a previous exam. Anyone may take this make-up exam. There is no make-up exam for the third hourly exam or for the make-up exam.
     You may prepare one 8½" x 11" formula sheet for your use during each hourly/make-up exam. No other papers or books may be used except those distributed with the exam. You must provide your own scientific calculator and #2 pencils for your use during the exams.
