Q 12. Batteries are connected in series, with the positive terminal of one
battery connected to the negative terminal of the next battery, to have a composite
battery with higher terminal potential difference (i.e., voltage). This works even
if the two batteries have different emfs. Batteries are connected in parallel, with
the two positive terminals connected together and the two negative terminals connected
together, to have a composite battery that can supply much more current than a single
battery. The two batteries must have the same emf to work properly.
Q 17. When the three capacitors are connected in parallel their equivalent capacitance
is much greater than when they are connected in series. Since the energy stored is
1/2 C V2, the parallel configuration will store more energy.
