Help in Writing Papers

Guideline for Writing a Philosophy Paper

From James Pryor, a professor of philosophy at Princeton University. This guide is extremely useful. I suggest that you begin by carefully reading this guide before you even begin to select your thesis for your paper. Even better, read it during the first week of class so you will be ready when paper time arrives.

Tips for Writing a Philosophy Paper

The Nizkor Project Fallacies Page

This website contains a list of common mistakes in reasoning (fallacies) with detailed explanations and examples. This is a great page to go to improve your reasoning and your paper writing (Thanks to Nathan Stine for bringing this site to my attention).

Online Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy

This is an excellent place to begin your research. Leading philosopher contribute in-depth essays, and continually update them to reflect recent developments.

The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy

Another good place to start your research. Good introductory essays on a growing number of topics.

Philosophy of Mind Dictionary

This dictionary contains peer-reviewed essays on topics in the philosophy of mind, written by leading philosophers.

Pages for Ethics Students

Ethics Updates

This site contains links to good discussion boards, lectures on ethics, and other resources for those of you interested in ethics.

Society for the Study of Ethics and Animals

This is a good site for anyone interested in the question of the moral status of animals. The society meets in conjunction with the American Philosophical Association, and papers are presented. Submission information can be found on the page.

Applied Ethics Resources on the WWW

Links to places where an interest in ethics can be put to good practical use.

A Bibliography of Meta-Ethics

This bibliography lists almost all of the most discussed, and some of the more obscure, papers written on meta-ethics. A uselful addition here is the fact that there are links to the websites of the authors when available.

Article Archives and ETexts

JSTOR

This excellent service allows you to access articles from some of the leading philosophy journals. However, to use this link, you must be at a terminal that is recognized by JSTOR. Check to see if your school has access to it.

Brown Electronic Article Review Service (BEARS)

This website contains newly published papers, with responses from leading philosophers. Check it every few months for changes (back issues are kept online).

Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts

You can get free copies of some widely read older works here.
