Sophomore Level (II, IIA)

In order to advance to the next level-Junior Standing (classified III,IIIA)
the student will be able to perform the following: [MUA 221, 222, 223]

Tone Development:
Anderson long tone exercises become habitual, tone becomes
full bodied and steady at a duration of 25 seconds.
Harmonic management exercises to Level II.

Scales: All major and minor scales from memory in chromatic order
in 16th notes at a tempo of 100 bpm., at 95% accuracy.
Anderson full range of instrument scales at 100 bpm.

Etudes: Complete an additional 30 etudes from the David Hite volumes
with supplemental material chosen by the instructor from
the following:

Gambaro - 12 Caprices for Clarinet
Polatschek - 12 Etudes
Rode - Etudes
Rose - 40 Etudes

Solos: Perform with accompaniment a work selected from the following
or equivalent each quarter with 95% accuracy.

Cavallini - Adagio and Tarantella
Finzi - Five Bagatelles
Heiden - Sonatina
Hindemith - Sonata
Krenek - Monologue for Solo Clarinet
Osborne - Rhapsody for Solo Clarinet
Schumann - Fantasiestuke (for A clarinet)
Tartini - Sonata
Weber - Concerto No. 1 or No. 2
Wellesz - Suite for Solo Clarinet

 

Other: By this time the student should demonstrate embouchure and
breathing concepts which can be classified as 90% correct.
The student should own several landmark recordings and
be assembling a library of solo repertoire, etudes and
orchestral excerpts. Harmonic exercises under firm control.

Students will be encouraged to perform in a variety of ensembles including:
Woodwind Quintets, Clarinet Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Bands,
Opera Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble.
