Senior Level (IV, IVA)

In order to graduate the student will be able to perform the
following: [MUA 421, 422, 423]

Tone Development:
Same as Junior Year.

Scales: All major and minor scales (as before) at a tempo of 120 bpm.
Anderson Scales (third time through until finished at 116-120 bpm.
Albert Scales, free of errors (level 1 of 4).

Etudes: Complete an additional 30 Etudes chosen from the following:

Sigel - 20th Century Clarinetist
Uhl - 48 Etudes for the Clarinet
Zitek - 16 Modern Etudes, Op. 16

Solos: Perform with accompaniment a work selected from the following
or others of equal difficulty.

Copland - Concerto
Debussy - Premiere Rhapsodie
Poulenc - Sonata
Reger - Sonatas, Op. 49
Spohr - Concertos, No. 1 - No. 4
Sutermeister - Cappriccio for Solo Clarinet

Other: Prepare a half-hour recital program to be presented sometime in
the senior year consisting of standard repertoire. Solos studied
will be selected to compliment the student's background and to
provide a varied and enjoyable senior recital experience.

Jury Exams: All clarinet students take jury exams during the fall and spring
quarters only. The jury exam is a very important part of applied study
and serves to promote students to the next level of applied classification.
Students need to refer to the "Applied Document" section
of the Student Handbook for more details.

Performance Majors and Graduate Students:
These students studying for the Applied Degree (BM or MM Clarinet
Performance) will essentially follow the same course outline;
however, will be held to a higher standard, expected to perform
more often and complete more repertoire. Enrollment is for 4
credits (i.e. MUA 241, 341, 441, etc.) and students have additional
