APPLIED MUSIC REPERTOIRE for CLARINET

The following list of composers and their works is intended to provide a general frame of reference and an indication of approximate levels of difficulty for each of the four years of study in applied music. This list is not to be considered limited; many other composers would be equally acceptable. Student receiving four credits per quarter in clarinet (Category I, II, III, IV) are expected to cover more repertoire than those receiving two credits (Category IA, IIA, IIIA, IVA). For a more detailed description of course requirements, the reader should contact the clarinet professor for a current course syllabus.

FRESHMAN YEAR (Category I, IA)
Correct any and all faulty fundamental concepts such as fingerings, articulation, and tone development using long tone studies, harmonic exercises and a variety of other rudimentary fundamental exercises. All major and natural minor scales should be performed in chromatic order, (preferably from memory) at a steady and moderate tempo. Anderson full range of instrument scales and articulation studies should be performed at MM 80 or Level I. Study material (etudes) shall include Hite-Melodious and Progressive Etudes Volume 1, or Rose-40 Etudes. Selected Solo material may include such works as: Stamitz-Concerto No. 3, Weber-Variations or Concertino, Debussy-Petite Piece, Bozza-Aria or solos from the Bonade-Concert and Contest collection.

SOPHOMORE YEAR (Category II, IIA)
Re-emphasize fundamentals if needed. All major and minor scales should be performed in chromatic order (preferably from memory) at a moderate tempo. Anderson scales should now be performed at MM 100 or Level II. Studies should include the Hite-Melodious and Progressive Studies Volume II, Rose-32 Etudes, and Polatschek-12 Etudes. Selected solo material may include such works as: Weber-Concerto No. 1, Osborne-Rhapsodie, Bernstein-Sonata or Schumann-Fantasiestuke.

JUNIOR YEAR (Category III, IIIA)
All major and minor scales should be performed in chromatic order from memory at an advanced tempo. Anderson scales should now be performed at MM 120 or Level III. Studies should include the Hite Italian or German Volumes, Gambaro-Caprices, or Uhl-48 Studies. Orchestral excerpts should be studied in context with performing in one of the school orchestras. Solo repertoire should include pieces like: Hindemith-Sonata, Poulenc-Sonata, Brahms-Sonatas, Mozart and Spohr-Concertos, and unaccompanied repertoire like the Stravinski-Three Pieces or the Larson-Dancing Solo.

SENIOR YEAR (Category IV, IVA)
All major and minor scales should be performed in chromatic order from memory at an advanced tempo. Anderson scale studies are replaced with the Albert scales which include multiple rhythm and chord patterns. Studies include the Hite Italian and German Volumes, Paganini-Caprices, Jean Jean-Etudes Modernes, or Bitsch-Etudes de Rhythme. Continue with orchestral studies and become familiar with contemporary techniques like multiphonics and multiple articulation. Students may elect to study reed making techniques using a ReeDuAl or similar machine. Solo material may include the Copeland-Concerto, Debussy-Premiere Rhapsodie, Reger-Sonatas, or Berg-Vier Stuke.
