Grading Procedure: Lesson will be graded each week over the assigned material. The student's final grade will be an average of the weekly grades with strong consideration given to progress over the quarter and performance in the Jury. In order for the student to achieve a grade of "A" the student must demonstrate a week-to-week practice ethic that yields results far in excess of the minimum standards as articulated in this document. Most students find this to mean a practice routine in excess of two hours a day-six days a week over the course of an academic quarter. The grade of "B" is interpreted as "above average" results, meaning that the student significantly and regularly exceeds the minimum standard; the grade of "C" will be interpreted as the student meeting, but not exceeding these standards; the grade of "D" or "F" will be interpreted as the students falling below the minimum standard and/or not completing all of the above requirements. Please refer to the Music Student Handbook for more details.
Attendance Policy: Students are expected to attend every lesson. If a student needs to miss a lesson for any reason, the instructor should be notified in advance. Lessons occurring on school holidays or missed without notification will not be rescheduled. Other schedule conflicts will be worked out at a mutually agreeable time between the instructor and the student. Students having less than seven lessons during an academic quarter will be given a failing grade regardless of progress.
Public Performance: All students are expected to perform as a soloist at least once a quarter. Students can perform on Student Recital (Tuesday and Thursday afternoons) or on a Studio Recital Program (evening recitals for the studio). Both recital venues have posted dates and the student is expected to secure their own accompanists. The instructor will provide more details by posting information on the Clarinet Studio Bulletin Board located outside M244. These performances are graded and will be reflected in the final grade. Please refer to the Music Student Handbook for more details.
Student Attitude: The Bachelor of Music degree is a professional degree and WSU is accredited by NASM, the most highly respected national accreditation agency. Student's who are enrolled are expected to display those habits and characteristics associated with professional demeanor and a positive attitude. This will include such things as a consistent practice routine, punctuality, being prepared, respectful of others feelings and good manners. In short, the student will not behave in a way that reflects poorly upon the studio, department or the university. The instructor retains the right to lower the student's grade or ask the student to leave the studio if these ideals are not met.
Performance Injuries: Included in this class will be material regarding the prevention of performance injuries appropriate to the study and performance of the clarinet.
