With a Class C net, there is
_one_ net and 254 hosts, no way to really subnet at all. I suppose you
could simulate subnetting, but no net software that I know of recognizes
it. OARnet is using Class C nets for what they call DMZ (Demilitarized
Zones or "no man's land" zones). Also, if you can get away with using
a Class C address, there is no reason to go higher, as the number of
Class B (and A) addresses is much more limited, and tying one of them
up seems "selfish".
One of the Sun networking manuals (Setting up your net or something like
that) covers the issues pretty well.
