Listen to Ian Jukes' Podcast . It is the pedegogy not the tool. But, whatever skills you acquire should permit you to do the work at home or at school. Therefore, I support platform independence. Remember, when you acquire skills for only one platform and software/hardware in not available to you, you are like a mechanic without tools. This is in reference to using Macintosh and then not having access to them.
