Who are the Students?

Who are Asian Americans? Hispanic Americans? Native Americans? Asian Americans are persons who are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who have at least one parent of Asian descent. Hispanic Americans are people who are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Many come from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Latin America. Native Americans are people who have Indian blood of tribes indigenuous to the United
States or who have Indian ancestors. The term Native American, came into usage in the 1960's to denote Indians, Eskimos and Aleuts of Alaska.

 

Services

What does the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center do?  The main functions of the Asian/Hispanic/Native American Center are:
 

  • to offer support services for Asian, Hispanic and Native American students

  • to advocate on their behalf to the University administration

  • to raise awareness in the campus community on Asian, Hispanic and Native American issues

  • to support cultural events aimed not only at enhancing the Asian, Hispanic and Native American students sense of identity, but also developing an appreciation for the Asian, Hispanic, and Native American cultures among all members of the Wright State community.

  • to provides support and advocacy to students, faculty, staff, organizations and members of the surrounding community with requests and concerns related to diversity

  • to provides resources for students in the development of learning opportunities in and outside of the classrooms

  • to provides resources for faculty in the development of diversity components in the curriculum and in the development of innovative teaching.

 

Programs

The Center s programs and events are developed with input and support from the Advisory Board. Throughout the academic year, the programs focus on the academic, cultural, historical, social, and personal aspects of Asian, Hispanic, and Native American students. These programs/activities include:

Library

The Center holds a variety of articles, magazines, books and videos specific to Asian, Hispanic, and Native American culture and interests.

 

Advisory Board

The Asian, Hispanic, and Native American communities are comprised of many different ethnic groups. The Advisory Board is comprised of students, faculty, and staff from each ethnic group, representatives from the community, and the Center Director. The Advisory Board provides advocacy and support in developing quality activities and programs consistent with the Center s mission and goals.

 

Links to other Organizations

The Center works collaboratively with the Bolinga Cultural Resource Center and Women s Center to co-sponsor common programs featuring the uniqueness and commonalities among the three centers. Additionally, the Center also collaborates with other units/departments on program planning and development.

The Center serves as an information center for the Asian Student Association (ASA), Hispanic Student Association (HSA), and the Native American Student Association (NASA). Mailboxes and an acitivity calendar for the above student groups are available in the Center.
