Larry Weinstein began carillon lessons with Arie Abbenes while a student in the School of Music at Indiana University and continued lessons with Hudson Ladd at the University of Michigan. He also studied with Pieter Bakker and Leen ‘t Hart at the Nederlandse Beiaardschool, a division of Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in The Netherlands where he received the Eindediploma. He was awarded the Prix d’Excellence for carillon performance and received first prizes for performance in competitions in Alkmaa, Goes, and Tiel.
In 1988, he was appointed carillonneur of the 57-bell Deeds Carillon at Carillon Historical Park in Dayton Ohio.
From 1990-1996, Dr. Weinstein served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA) and from 1993-96 as President of that organization.
Dr. Weinstein has performed on most of the major instruments in the United States and Europe including the House of Parliament (Ottawa), University of Michigan, University of California-Berkeley, University of Chicago, Princeton University, Ball State University, the National Cathedral in Washington D.C., the Cathedral of Notre Dame (Antwerp), Vor Frelsers Kirke (Copenhagen), and The Royal Palace, Westertoren, and Olde Kirkstoren in Amsterdam, and Utrecht. He also has performed during the international carillon festivals in Springfield, Illinois and Lakes Wales, Florida, and for national meetings of the GCNA and Nederlandse Klokkenspel-Vereniging.
In 1996, Frank Carmone, former endowed chair in the marketing department at Wright State University, invited me to join him for a weekend with the Audi Club at Blackhawk Farms Race Track in South Beloit, Wisconsin. I had just purchased a Lotus Elan so it seemed to be a good opportunity to see how well it handled on the track. What I learned however, was that I had no natural driving talent whatsoever. Six days with the Russel School at Infineon Raceway helped a lot. And a lot of seat time.
So eleven years later, I’m now a track instructor. I’ve instructed for the Audi Club as well as with various chapters of the Porsche, BMW, Viper, Ferrari, and Mustang clubs and the National Auto Sport Association (NASA). Ferraris definitely are my favorite. Nothing quite like riding in a 355 Challenge Stadale at Watkins Glen… although Vipers certainly would be a close second.
I’ve run on most of the tracks in this half of the country. Favorites are VIR, MidOhio, Road Atlanta, and Watkins Glen. Infineon in California also is a blast.
Exciting moments: the time I rolled my Integra four times in the carousel at MidOhio... going off the front straight at 110 at Putnam when the brakes failed on my student’s GTS… rolling at Roebling Road - and then getting back into the race! They black flagged me for that stunt.
My current track car is a 2002 Panoz Esperante powered by a 310 h.p. 32- valve Cobra engine. Previous toys include a 1991 Lotus Elan, Delorean, Aston Martin DB4; Porsche 944 Turbo S, C4 Carrera, and 968; an Acura Integra, a VW GTI, and a Royale RP-4 sport racer.
