The program completed its 6th
year in June 2008 and over 1200 girls have participated!

Goals of the program are for girls to gain:
- Confidence in abilities
- Pride about interests
- Renewed interest in science and math
- Awareness of range of careers in science,
math, & technology
- Appreciation for need to make a plan to take
science and math courses in high school and/or college
- Better educated parents on science and math
career options and the need for related coursework in high school and
college

Details of program:
- Targets 6th and/or 7th
grade girls
- Meetings held monthly after school on school
grounds
- Meetings are “girls only”
- “Mothers” are invited to all
program events
- Each meeting includes a women scientist who:
- provides hands-on activities related to her
career
- discusses her career and its usefulness to
society
- discusses what science and math courses are
necessary for careers in her field
- Program can be tailored to the needs of the
individual schools. Schools are
provided with a list of presenters from which to choose.
- The
program also includes a Saturday field trip to a local university for
a Tour of Women
Scientists
- For last program event each girl creates and
presents a poster titled “If I were going to be a scientist, I
would be a….” (see right)
