Keep it
active and engaging!
Remember that your
target audience is 10-12 years old and that they have been sitting in
classes all day.
Choose any field or
career in science, math, or technology to represent and select a hands-on
activity that relates. The topic you
choose does not have to be your own career and the hands-on activity does
not have to be something you actually do in your job.
Sample Presentation:
5 minutes Introduce
yourself, your job title, where you work, what you do
45 minutes Hands-on activity related to field or
career you represent
(Many ideas or activities can be found on the web
such as www.eduref.org. In addition, we are
available to help you in this process if
necessary. Keep in mind that you
will likely have to
provide most if not all materials for the
activity that you choose to do.)
10 minutes Discuss
some of the following with the girls:
·
What do you
like about your job?
·
How is
your job useful to others or helps society?
·
Share your
story about how you got into this career.
·
Were your
parents/friends supportive?
·
What
challenges did you face?
·
What is it like
being a female in this particular field?
(challenges, unique job opportunities)
·
What is it
like being a mother/wife (if pertinent) and having a science career?
·
What
science/math classes are important in high school and college for this
career?
·
Any advice
you would give the girls?
·
Take
questions from girls (and their mothers if present)
A description of each presenter’s activity
is posted on a separate website for teachers in the program to use when
choosing presenters. If you would
like access to this site when preparing your presentation, please email kathy.koenig
