METHODOLOGY: A theoretical framework for implementation
of information systems will be provided through reading and discussing the text.
In general, the lecture will follow the course outline and the text
presentation. The instructor will utilize additional information, as required,
to supplement the text.
Discussions will include the
impact computers have on business and society. How the use of computers to store
vast amounts of data can be a threat to individual privacy and a stimulus for
illegal and unethical use.
Systems design will be
introduced to the student by the use of exercises in designing a simple
information system using the Access database software. These assignments
will also be part of the MIS300 Lab. You must pass the lab to pass
the class.
Assignments: Text material and topics are assigned on the attached schedule. It is assumed the student has read the assignment and corresponding text chapter prior to class and will use the lecture to clarify difficult materials. We will not have time to cover all chapter material in class but the student is expected to read and know the material. Quizzes will be given on each chapter via WebCT outside of class. Please do not take quizzes during class time. Any changes to the schedule and homework assignments will be given in class. If you must miss class for any reason, it is your responsibility to get the notes and find out what you missed.
Class Power Point Slides: To print the class Powerpoint slides, go to the WebCT web site, http://wisdom.wright.edu/ Log in using your Wright State email username and password. Select the desired course. Select the PowerPoint slides folder, the chapter you wish to see or print. The slides do not reflect all that is covered in class. Essay questions often reflect videos, discussion from class not referenced on the slides. It is important to attend class to get this information. Also, it is recommended you print the slides before class and take notes on them.
Quizzes: A Multiple Choice quiz is available on WebCT for each chapter covered. The quizzes will be based on the text and the student should read the chapter before taking the quiz. The quizzes are available for a limited number of days and may not be taken after that. The quizzes must be taken on the student's time and not during class time. Each quiz has 10 questions and you are allotted 10 minutes to take them. Once the time frame is up, you can only submit your test and not change or add answers. You should save each answer as you make it so they will be written when you submit your test if you should time out or have a network problem.. There will be a total of 12 quizzes at 10 points each. There will be a total of 125 points (5 for the Intro quiz given on Day 1). Any points over 100 will be considered as extra credit.
You will have 2 chances to take each quiz within the days allotted and the highest score will be used. The questions may vary each time you take the quiz as there are 15 questions and 10 are randomly selected. The questions and score will be available after you submit the completed exam. The correct answers for the questions will not be given but an indication will be given in WebCT if the answer was incorrect (0 score). You must take the quiz to have access to the questions via WebCT. NO make-up quizzes will be given. Quizzes will make up 10% of your grade or 100 points. One benefit of these quizzes is that approximately 50% of the exam multiple choice questions will come from these quizzes.
Exams: Materials included in the exams will be taken from the text, quizzes, article/case reviews and class lecture/discussions. Exams will be administered on the dates scheduled. Please note these dates on the class schedule sheet. Students are not permitted to retain these exams. The tests will be multiple choice and essay. The multiple choice portion will be done first using WebCT and must be completed before you are given the essay portion. Once done with the multiple choice, LogOff your computer and indicate to the teacher that you are ready to do the essay portion. The average of the three exams will comprise 45% of your grade or 450 points.
Cases: Homework/In class: Individual and in-class group cases will be assigned. For the individual cases, read the case and answer the questions. Some of the individual cases will be cases at the end of the chapters in the book. There are more than 200 points of work available so the student may choose those assignment they wish to do. Please TYPE any homework case assigned. For the in-class team cases, you must attend to receive credit. They will be done in groups and handed-in during class. There will be due dates on all cases and they will NOT be accepted after the due date has passed. The Cases/In class team work comprise 20% or 200 points.

LAB: Successful completion of the lab requires regular attendance, reading lessons before each class session and completion of weekly assignments. It is assumed that you have had some experience with Access 2003 database software. We will be covering Access 2007 in class. There will be a hands on exam given in class for which you must use Access 2007 (which is significantly different than Access 2003) so it is recommended you use that version to do your homework so you are familiar with it. We will also be spending two class periods on Dreamweaver creating a small website. Most labs will be held on Friday and the homework assigned that Friday is due the following Friday at the beginning of class unless indicated. All homework handed in after the beginning of class is subject to point reduction. Once the graded lab is returned (usually the following Monday) NO late labs will be accepted. You still need to complete the lab however because it will be graded again as part of the final disk file submitted. For all but the last Access and Dreamweaver labs, you will turn in printed results of what you have done to be graded. The finished project file for each will be submitted via a WebCT Assignment on the due dates listed on the syllabus.
In class we will cover a sample similar to what you will be doing for homework. The homework will be based this quarter on the JMS TechWizards case in your Access text with some additions. The full requirement and grading criteria for each lab will be posted to WebCT under Lab Grading Criteria. Also, any files to do the labs will be posted on WebCT under Lab Files.
There will also be multiple choice question on both Access and Dreamweaver as part of the Final. The Lab comprises 25% or 250 points.
Students must pass the lab portion (150 points) of MIS 300 to pass the MIS 300 course! All lab homework is due at the beginning of class and is considered late if handed in later and subject to reduction in points!!!

Exam is Hands-on in the Lab and must be done on a PC from the lab not a
laptop.
* You cannot earn more than 250 points in the lab portion of the
class. If you earn extra credit points, they may only be applied to
the lab portion of your grade for MIS 300, the points will not carry over to the
lecture portion of your grade. Extra credit assignments may be
offered at the instructor's discretion.
Lab Attendance
Lab attendance is very
crucial! Labs may be subject to last minute changes which you will
not be aware of unless you attend lab. Any questions about the assignments
that may arise can be answered during the lab. If you do not attend you
will not benefit from the help and advice of your lab instructor and
GA.
During the Lab we
will cover a case similar to what you will do for homework. We will cover
examples NOT covered in the text but which relate to the homework or exam.
You are expected to do these examples with your instructor and NOT work on
homework. During the in-class exercises, key points and problems areas
which relate to the homework will be pointed out and discussed. Sometimes
there will be extra time to begin your homework at the end of lecture.
However, in most cases, additional time outside of lab time will be needed to
finish the homework. You can get a copy of Office 2007 Pro Plus for ~
$59. To order, log on to www.wright.edu/cats/software .
For the Dreamweaver software, the ISOM (271 Rike) office has an installation CD you can borrow overnight with a free 30-day trial version from
Adobe.
Testing: All Lab exams will be done on lab computers not
personal PCs.
Late Work Policy All Assignments are due at the beginning of class. Do not expect to come to class and finish or print the assignment due that day. Once class has begun, if you have not handed your assignment to the instructor, the assignment is late and points will be deducted. The professor has the right to not accept late assignment at all. Any accepted late assignment will be subjected to a 10% penalty each day it is late. The instructor reserves the right to use her own discretion regarding acceptance of late assignments. Once an assignment is graded and handed back to the class, late assignments are not accepted!! Late cases are never accepted. If emailed, they should be sent before class time to be accepted! Please email to the instructor's WebCT mail account.
If changes are made, the student will be advised during class.
