Seven Strategies for Successful Foreign Language Acquisition

1.   Learning a language is like building a pyramid; without a solid foundation, the rest will fall apart!

Take time to learn the basics well, because you will never stop using them during your studies.

2.   Have a positive attitude and relax – it is normal and natural to make mistakes as you learn a language.

3.   Learning a language is an ACTIVE process. You must participate, and if you don’t understand, ASK!

4.   Set aside a few special times each day for studying. It is better to study no longer than 20-30 minutes

each time – if you study for much longer than this your brain will not efficiently retain the information.

5.   Find a study buddy! Having someone to practice the foreign language with outside the class is a great help.
Compare your homework assignments and try to come up with the right answer.

6.   To learn vocabulary: pronounce the words aloud, practice writing and spelling words you think will be
on the test and associate words with things that will help you remember them.
