World War II Service and Diary of John R. McKnight - Ex Rd M 3c USN

Jack (2nd from the right)
and his Greenfield buddies.
On September 30, 1942 Jack left Pittsburgh and the next day entered basic training at the U.S. Naval Training Station in Newport, Rhode Island. Following "basic", Jack was given a seven-day leave. He returned to Pittsburgh, visiting with family and Kitty from October 27 to November 3.

Jack's older brother, Tom, was with the U.S. Army infantry in England. His younger brother, Jim joined the army that December.
Jim would eventually see action in Sicily where he was wounded. Both brothers would participate in the D-Day invasion. Tom was wounded in action two weeks later and sent home.
On November 3, Jack returned to Newport and was immediately transferred to the U.S. Navy Receiving Station in Boston, assigned to mess duty. He hated the boring kitchen work; never anticipating this was the way he would fight the war. Jack became friend with another sailor, Bill McClellan, and during free time they toured the sites of Boston.

Jack continued his mess duties in Boston, spending Thanksgiving and Christmas in the kitchen.
