| Under the command of Col. Thomas E. Checkering the 41st Massachusetts Infantry left for New
York on November 5, 1862 with orders to join the Army Department of the Gulf. On December 4th the unit sailed from New York for New Orleans. By December 17, 1862 the 41st Infantry reached Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Barney spent the remainder of the winter with his unit there. Beginning in March of 1863 the 41st joined the Tech Expedition. They moved north out of Baton Rouge raiding Confederate supplies and capturing all types of contraband. In May Barney's unit was mounted and moved south to New Orleans.
By special order the 41st Infantry was split and Bernard became a member of the newly formed Massachusetts 3rd Cavalry, Company G. The 3rd Cavalry engaged the enemy in the area of Port Hudson, participating in the siege and capture of the town on July 9, 1863. Col. Checkering became the provost marshal of Port Hudson and the 3rd Cavalry was stationed just south at Plains Store on the road to Baton Rouge.
