Friday, July 23, 2009.  First day on Malaspina with Mike Taylor and Guy.  Went out twice.

·         First time on light winds.

·         Second time on winds up to 11 mph.  Two hour sail in waves that occasionally splashed over the bow.  The sideboards are set too far aft, and the glued floorboards loosened.  (These floorboards were an afterthought – they are now screwed on).

Thursday, July 6, 2009.  Two trips:

·         Guy and Mike on moderate winds (6mph).  Used the two leeboard arrangement, with the mast set aft to remove the lee helm.  Boat was balanced, but operating the two leeboards is too much trouble for the novice sailor.

·         Mike and C. in same wind conditions after 5 pm.  C. is the first student sailor!  We moved the pivot point down to the middle of the side panel, which allows the leeboard to also work on the windward side.  Malaspina now operates with only one sideboard on the starboard side.

Monday, August 3, 2009 (approximate date)

·         Mike performed his first solo, with Guy on shore.

Saturday, August 15, 2009 (approximate date)

·         Mike and Guy attempted circumnavigation of Safety Island.  Too little wind.

Wednesday, August 26, 2009.  Two great trips:

·         Gwen and Andrea went out with Mike for a long sail.  (A first for three in a boat.)

·         Steve and Kevin out with Mike for another long sail.  (Three men in the boat!)

Tuesday, September 3, 2009

·         Mike and Kevin on short sail.  Rudder broke.

Friday, September 11, 2009

·         Guy at helm for first time, taking Dennis for his first trip.

Monday, September 14, 2009

·         Guy solo in light winds as students ate free food.  Malaspina likes light winds, but does not like waves, especially coming to the bow.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

·         Guy and Megan (SM144) in front of free food and bull.  Gusty winds, off shore breeze, smooth at first, then waves.  Hard to go against waves, again.

Sunday, September 20, 2009

·         Guy and Mike close to shore looking for the thunderstorm that never came.  Hunter threw a bottle of water into the lake.
