Northmont Academic Challenge Tournament
|
Congratulations team on making the finals of ONN's Brain Game.Congratulations Brandon Williams on being selected to the HSAPQ All Ohio All-Star Team! WelcomeWelcome to the new and improved website of the Northmont Academic Challenge Team. The Northmont Academic Challenge Team, founded in 1990 by Mrs. Roberts has a long tradition of being one of the top academic teams in Southwest Ohio. Highlights of the team include:
As with any activity, the more work you put into it, the better you will be. Participation in Academic Challenge is open to any student at Northmont High School. As many students participate in other activities, students are welcome to participate during whatever quarters their schedules allow; however, participation in tournaments will be set based upon what team gives us the best chance to win. We regularly have freshmen and sophomores who compete and contribute mightily to our team, so don’t be intimidated! 2009-2010 Team Highlights
For ParentsThe Northmont Academic Challenge team travels regularly, beginning in September and ending in May with the National Championship competitions. We currently host two tournaments during the year (one at Northmont and one at Wright State University) to raise money to cover hotels, entrance fees and transportation. However, occasionally, students will be asked to pay a portion of the cost for our tournaments. In order to keep costs down for participants, it is important that all students (and hopefully parents!) be involved in assisting with our tournaments. This can include reading matches, scorekeeping, helping set-up food for our volunteers or picking up food from donors, or helping Mr. Jones and Mr. Czupryn with organizing the event. Each week, we will announce the team for that weekend’s tournament and will distribute permission slips for the event. These permission slips will be distributed every Monday for a Saturday tournament. If your student is attending a weekend event, please make sure that they have their signed permission slip to Mr. Jones before the event, or they will be unable to travel with the team. In order to keep you in the loop, I will send home monthly newsletters detailing the results and progress of our team. I also invite parents to sit in on practice, or to come to one of our events. The students work very hard to excel, and unlike other athletics, we get very little recognition for our success. If you have any questions about the team, your student’s progress, or any of our events, do not hesitate to contact me at (937) 775-2138 or david.jones@wright.edu.

GWOC League Schedule:
MVAC League Schedule (Varsity & JV): High School & Middle School Teams
PracticesPractices are held on Tuesdays and Fridays after school from 3:00-5:00 pm in room 255. Currently, all students practice together, but as the team grows, we may split off into varsity and JV practices. Also, assistant coach Joe Czupryn runs a team at Northmont Middle School as a start up program for the high school team. All middle school students are welcome to practice with the middle school team, and may have the opportunity to participate in some JV high school events. The team works best when everyone focuses on a core area. All students will be expected to familiarize themselves with the “You Gotta Know Lists” on www.naqt.com. Weekly quizzes to determine tournament participation will be based upon those quizzes, other study guides that are distributed, and knowledge in your particular area of expertise. Each student is expected to select two areas of expertise from one of the following areas:
Students will be given study guides and are expected to do outside research on their subject areas. Teams will be composed of students who are specialists in a variety of topics- therefore, the easiest way to play is to study something that no one else knows! |
