HONOR SEMINARS of  Metropolitan Dayton

Dr. Lerroy V. Jones

HSMD Student Scholarship

Purpose: Family of Dr. Lerroy V. Jones funds an annual Memorial scholarship to a selected student participant of Honor Seminars of Metropolitan Dayton, Inc. (HSMD). HSMD Board of Directors administers the selection and award of the scholarship.

Eligibility: Honor Seminars of Metropolitan Dayton, Inc. student who is a senior in his or her respective high school who will graduate at completion of academic year of consideration and who will major in science or engineering. The student must be enrolled as a full time student in a college/university the following fall term in order to receive the scholarship payment. Should a student forfeit this scholarship, the award will be made to an alternate selectee.

Award: One scholarship to a qualified student - $1000 to be applied toward school expenses. The award is made to the college/university. The selectee and Parents are invited to the June HSMD Board meeting.

Sponsor: The family of Dr. Lerroy V. Jones and Honor Seminars of Metropolitan Dayton, Inc.

Criteria:

  • HSMD participation and attendance 
  • Student essay (maximum one page) - topic provided by HSMD President
  • Extracurricular achievements, awards, and contributions to community 
  • Letter of recommendation from a science or mathematics teacher, guidance counselor, or Principal 
  • Scholastic achievement
Applications: Obtain the application form from the HSMD President, or use this application form.

Deadline: Application deadline is set by the HSMD President in the senior program year.

Selection: The selection process chaired by the Jones Scholarship Committee Chair will include the HSMD President and one other HSMD Board member. An alternate student recipient will be selected in case of a forfeit by the primary selectee. The alternate selectee will not be announced.

Selection Process: In the second semester the HSMD President hands out, or refers all interested Seniors to the HSMD web page for, applications. The applications are due to the HSMD President not later than the deadline established by the President. The Jones Scholarship Committee completes selection. The Committee Chair forwards the results to the Chairman of the Board with a letter to the Executor of the Jones Estate prepared for his signature. The selectee is notified of the award in the Spring.
