Guide to the Final Exam

 

 

The exam will have three sections, and you will have two hours to complete the exam.  It is designed to be completed in a little over an hour.  The timings below are an approximate timeline to pace yourself.

 

I. Six identifications of people or things. [20 minutes]

II. Five short answer questions. [20 minutes] 

III. Essay [About 40 minutes]

 

 

Two of the following essay questions will be selected at random during the exam. You will write on ONE of them.

 

1. Describe a perfect knight who lived according to all the ideals of chivalry as they were  articulated in the High Middle Ages.  In your answer, consider the Song of Roland, Lancelot and Pope Urban's call to crusade.

 

2. Discuss the "rules of love" as they were laid out in the Lancelot and the trial of lovers.  Be sure to discuss what how love was defined and what obligations it placed on male and female lovers.

 

3. Write an essay that traces the changing dimensions of church power in medieval history.  Be sure in your answer to discuss the "spiritual revolution," the investiture controversy, the crusades, and the troubles of the church in the late middle ages.

 

4. Choose and describe the three most significant and influential cultural developments of the Middle Ages.  Explain your choices.
