MIS480 Introduction to RFID for Business (4.0 cr.)

This course will introduce students to the principles and concepts around the emerging technology of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Centered around the topics included in the CompTIA RFID+ Certification test, this course will prepare students interested in becoming RFID+ certified. In addition, the course will provide hands-on experience with using RFID hardware and software to learn the process of tagging, creating RFID installations and troubleshooting problems with RFID-based applications.

Pre-requisites: None.

Course Objectives

The primary objective of this course is to provide students with the knowledge required for designing, developing, implementing and administering RFID-based applications. One auxiliary objective of this course is to prepare students for the CompTIA RFID+ certification exam.

Upon successfully completing this course, the student will:

  1. understand the basic principles and standards governing the RFID technology;
  2. understand the working of RFID tags, readers, antennas and networks;
  3. learn how to set up proper installations providing optimal reads of RFID tags;
  4. learn how to troubleshoot sites and installations involving RFID devices;
  5. learn how RFID can be used to solve supply-chain and other related problems.
