This policy provides guidance for obtaining treatment for injuries and illnesses that require the attention of health care professionals. This policy is applicable for employees, including student employees, in a work situation or for students in a didactic setting or at a university sponsored activity, regardless of location. Choosing a medical facility for treating injuries or illnesses not related to a work situation or a university sponsored activity is an individual personal decision.

1. This section lists facilities where medical care can be obtained for situations not requiring immediate attention and the individual is ambulatory and can be transported.

1. Dayton Campus (3640 Colonel Glenn Highway)

a.) The first choice for non-emergency medical care is Student Health Services in 051 of the Student Union (775-2552). Operating hours are 8:30 am until 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Whenever possible, the injured or ill person should be accompanied to the facility. An individual who requires treatment beyond the capabilities of Student Health Services will be referred to other medical care facilities in the local area.

b.) Other options

1.) Greene Memorial Hospital Urgent Care, 3371 Kemp Road, Beavercreek, Ohio (320-3500). Operating hours are 12:00 pm until 10:00 pm, Monday through Sunday.

2.) Doctors’ Urgent Care, Gateway Drive and Yellow Springs Road, Fairborn, Ohio (873-9500). Operating hours are 8:30 am until 10:00 pm, Monday through Sunday.

3.) A university employee or student on the Dayton Campus who requires non-emergency medical attention during the hours of 11:00 pm until 8:30 am, Monday through Sunday, should go to the closest available hospital. Miami Valley Hospital is the recommended medical facility.

c.) A visitor on the Dayton Campus who requires non-emergency medical care should call the Police Department at 775-2111, 911 for assistance. Emergency telephones are located throughout the campus.

2. Locations other than the Dayton Campus

a.) A university employee or student at a location other than the Dayton Campus who requires non-emergency medical care should utilize the closest available medical facility.

b.) A university visitor at a location other than the Dayton campus who requires non-emergency medical care should contact a local paramedic unit for assistance.

2. Whenever possible, a university employee should accompany the injured or ill employee or student to the chosen medical facility. For situations which require that the injured or ill person be driven or the injured or ill person requests being driven to the facility, a university vehicle should be used. A privately owned vehicle should be used only as a last resort.

This section addresses situations that require immediate medical attention by health care professionals.

1. Emergency telephones are located throughout the campus.
2. Locations other than the Dayton Campus

If a university employee, student, or visitor at a location other than the Dayton Campus requires immediate medical attention, regardless of the time of day, the closest paramedic unit should be contacted for assistance. Exception: Assistance for a medical emergency that occurs at the Cox Institute, School of Medicine Veterans Affairs facilities, or the Yellow Springs Family Health Center should be obtained from the adjoining medical facility.

All incidents involving an injury or illness that occurs to an individual on any university owned or leased property or that occurs during a university sponsored activity, regardless of location, must be reported to the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. Wright Way Policy 6032 (Reporting Injuries and Illnesses) provides complete instructions for filing a report.

The following procedures for paying medical bills apply to all university facilities, either on campus or off campus.

1. Evaluation and determination of insurance coverage will be made only after the Department of Environmental Health and Safety receives an incident report form as outlined in Wright Way Policy 6032 (Reporting Injuries and Illnesses) and only after EHS has referred the report to the appropriate university insurance office.
2. All inquiries relating to payment of medical expenses associated with an occupational or non-occupational injury or illness are to be directed to the Worker’s Compensation Office (354 University Hall). Occupational and non-occupational injuries or illnesses are defined in Wright Way Policy 6032.
