Wright State University
Policy number: 6012
Subject: Transporting Hazardous and Toxic Materials
Date issued: Revised/October 2000
Authority: Vice President for Business and Fiscal Affairs
References: Department of Environmental Health and Safety
6012.1 Purpose of Policy
- Transporting hazardous and toxic materials throughout the hallways, tunnels,
and elevators of the university requires special precautions. Hand carrying
materials of this nature (acids, bases, solvents, etc.) without protective
containers or free standing on small carts offers a high potential for incidents
involving the breakage of bottles and the subsequent exposure of people
to chemical injury and/or inhalation of vapors.
- Transporting hazardous and toxic materials in an unsafe manner is unacceptable.
Therefore, the Department of Environmental Health and Safety has developed
the following rules.
6012.2 Rules to Ensure Safe Transport of Hazardous and Toxic Materials
- Each university department is responsible for the safe transport of hazardous
and toxic materials in the common areas of the university, as well as in
the use areas.
- Staff in University Laboratory Store shall refuse to issue hazardous
or toxic materials to any person not properly equipped to transport such
materials. Approved portable polyfoam or nalgene bottle carriers in appropriate
sizes are available at Lab Stores for purchase or on a use-and-return basis
[refer to Wright Way Policy 5409 (University
Laboratory Store)].
