When recruiting and/or hiring temporary faculty and research personnel in the H-1B visa category, the university must satisfactorily submit a labor condition application to the Department of Labor (DOL) and receive approval of the application for each position before hiring. The DOL requires that the university guarantee that the wages offered are at least the higher of the actual wage rate paid to all other workers with similar experience and qualifications for the specific employment or the prevailing wage rate for the classification in the specific area of employment.

Research Technician 1. One year of college or high school and one year of experience is required.

Research Assistant 1, Biological Sciences. A bachelor's degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required, such as two years of college and two years of directly related experience.

Research Assistant 1, Social Sciences/Liberal Arts. A bachelor's degree in a social science or a combination of education and experience is required, such as two years of college and two years of related experience or other equivalent combination.

A Ph.D. or M.D. degree in an appropriate field, extensive experience in a professional area (research, development, evaluation, instrumentation), considerable experience in an R & D setting (i.e., planning and conducting R & D projects/programs in terms of technical and managerial functions), and experience in development in an area of specialization or an equivalent combination of education and experience on MS/MA and extensive equivalent experience is required.

Postdoctoral Research Associate. A doctoral degree in a specialized field of study is required.

Research Scientist. A doctoral degree in an appropriate field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. At this level, the researcher has a demonstrated ability as a competent and productive worker. The incumbent may have authored several publications of considerable interest and value to the field.
