XMLDonna and Jeff Z. attended an XML workshop in Detroit. We learned a lot, but most of it is not very useful until XML support is more widespread. Current Web browsers have questionable XML support. No version of Netscape supports XML, not even NS 6. IE 5 and 5.5 both have outdated support (standards were not yet in place), although you can download and install an updated XML parser from Microsoft that will bring IE up to speed. On a side note, Apple's OS X stores all its preference data as industry standard XML, and newer versions of MS Office are using XML for PowerPoint, Access, and other applications. PHP & mySQLCEHS shared examples of how they are using PHP & mySQL on their server to create dynamic information and provide some search functions. They also have an on-the-fly PDF generator for their Web pages and an error logging utility that sends e-mail to the webmaster when a user encounters a server error. The main Web server will be upgraded to Apache soon and will include support for PHP and mySQL. See the Web server notes for more information about upcoming changes and upgrades. AccessibilityBeginning July 1, inaccessibile pages will be required to become accessible within 2 weeks or be removed from the Web server. A statement was sent out April 12 to all WSU Web publishers to inform them of their responsibilities. You can check your pages using the Master Checklist. Accessibility workshops are offered twice each quarter.ROX (Raider Online eXpress)

Miscellaneous NotesThe University Library is looking for link-checking software - SOM uses Astra Site Manager. It runs on a Windows 2000 workstation using Windows Scheduling Manager, doesn't deal with orphan pages, and can be told to ignore specified links. |
