We Serve U

Volunteer Opportunities

Transforming the communities we serve is truly embraced by the entire Wright State campus. This is the first initiative that concentrates on the volunteering activities of Wright State University staff members and we thank you for helping to make it successful. There are many wonderful organizations that need help. Identify a volunteer opportunity today. You will be guided through the process by prompts.

We encourage you to check with your supervisor and co-workers to ask for their involvement with the project. Contact a We Serve U committee member if you have any questions.

El Puente

El Puente Educational Center is an after-school program that provides tutoring for K-6th grade Latino students who are learning English as their second language.  Our volunteers help students work on homework, read with them, and play games with them.  Knowledge of Spanish is not required, but it is a great way to practice learning another language if you happen to be studying Spanish.  We tutor Monday-Friday from 3:15 to 5:15 pm at the St. Mary's Center in East Dayton.  Feel free to visit our website at www.elpuentedayton.org.

If you're interested in volunteering, please contact Alyssa Torres, Program Director, at alyssa.m.wagner@gmail.com.

St John’s ESOL Program

Are you looking for a volunteer teaching opportunity?  Do you enjoy interacting with people from around the world?  We are a grant-funded program that provides free ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) classes to adult immigrants and refugees.  We average about 100 adult students each day and offer five levels of English instruction.  Last year we enrolled nearly 500 students.  They came from 65 different countries and among them spoke over 60 different languages.  Classes are Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 11:45am.  You do not need to be certified in ESOL to volunteer for this program – we will help train prospective volunteers.  Instruction is in English using Cambridge ESL curriculum.  If you are interested, please contact Becky Williams at rwilliams@mvctc.com or call 937-461-3332.

Therapeutic Riding Institute(TRI)

TRI's mission is to improve the lives and health of children and adults in Southwest Ohio with special physical, cognitive, social, and psychological needs through Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies.

Not every volunteer that comes to our farm (located in Springboro, just off Route 75) has experience with horses, but we know that some of you want to learn!  In addition to the opportunities to learn more about horses, we'll also be offering workshops that will build the Side Helpers skills to help their students.  Learn more about our volunteer opportunities at:  http://triohio.org/volunteer/

Please don't forget to log your hours. Every hour logged demonstrates the staff's commitment to to our communities and those in Raider Country!

Have you wanted to help but had trouble finding the right fit? If you would like to volunteer to help We Serve U with one of our service projects, email us at weserveu@wright.edu.

Thank you for checking out our volunteer opportunities.
