Paul Laurence Dunbar Library Atrium

The focal point of this four-story building is the second floor. The central, open study area is flooded with natural sunlight from the full-wall window on the northeast side. Individual and group study needs can be met in its spacious and bright interior. Included are single study-cubicles, larger tables for group study, and low, comfy chairs clustered around small tables which afford small group conversation. On either side of the study area are the book stacks. The third and fourth floor book stacks are built directly over the second floor book stacks leaving the study area open -- high and lofty and rising the full three floors. The high ceiling culminates in a vault of colored panels that resembles stained glass. The upper levels have an open-wall construction which makes them clearly visible from the lower study area. Lush, green plants in giant pots are strategically placed by the stairway leading to the ground floor and circulation desk.
