Preparing for the Future
Since I have been attending Wright State, my life has changed tremendously. Moving away from home was a big transition for me, requiring me to mature at a rapid pace. I also met people from all over the world, being exposed to hundreds of different cultures, and getting a firsthand look into other lifestyles.
In engineering 101 we were required to design and build a bridge out of K’NEX that could hold at least 50lbs while certain restraints, such as quantity of pieces, were put on the project. I was in a group of 3 students, and we worked for two weeks trying to figure out how to make a successful design. The professor used this project as our final exam grade, which I thought was a really intriguing and fun way to keep the students engaged. We ended up successfully completing the project, after many failed attempts, and receiving an A in the class.
My biggest fear about starting college was that I would not be able to stay focused on school with all the freedom I had to do basically whatever I wanted. The simple decision of whether or not to wake up and go to class everyday can be a catastrophic decision if chosen incorrectly. I overcame this fear by surrounding myself by people who were also determined to do well in school. We formed a family at school where we checked in on each other to make sure we got the support we need at any time.
Feeling at Home
I love living on campus because the living arrangements are really great. The dorms freshman year were some of the best ones I have seen in Ohio for the amount they cost, and the upper classmen apartments are perfect for any college student. The housing is extremely close to campus, allowing me to reach my classes in 7 minutes or less on average.
Making a Difference
I have been involved any many service opportunities such as voteless people hopeless people, my brothers keeper, march of dimes, and many others. I have learned from these opportunities that scholarship, manly deeds, and love for all mankind are three values that will make any person better
A Little Advice
If I had one thing to tell new students attending Wright State University, it would be to make sure you get to know positive upper classmen. Upper classmen have been through the trials and tribulations that new students face, and can offer advice to help students succeed.
A Few of My Favorite Things
My favorite spot on campus is Russ engineering because it holds some of the most fascinating and innovative minds of the school. Science is the future, and the inventions that the students at Wright State come up with are remarkable.
My favorite class was music 290, the study of African American music. It was my favorite class because I learned a tremendous amount about my culture, while having fun and listening to the music of timeless artist.
My favorite on campus experience definitely has to be joining Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. where we develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.
