Winter Ambassador Program

Academic Credit

Students participating in this
program will register for 3 credits in NUR 414/317/715. Cultural,
educational, political, and economic aspects of health care in the
United Kingdom will be examined during the twelve days in Edinburgh and
London. Students will spend several hours each day exploring the history
of health care in the UK through visits to a number of health care
related centers and museums. Opportunities for interaction with other
nursing students will allow participants to explore nursing education
from a different national and cultural perspective. Prior to departure,
students will be responsible for submitting a term paper reflective of
the course content and objectives. Students will keep journals
reflective of their personal observations of the British health care
system. A “windshield” survey of life in the UK will be conducted
examining the health status of its people. |
Edinburgh

The group will spend several
days in Edinburgh at the beginning of the program. Participants will
visit Napier University’s Department of Nursing, health care agencies,
and related historical sites.
Additionally, participants will visit the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle,
and Princes Street. Students will have a free day to take advantage of
optional coach tours of the Highlands, Loch Ness, or Loch Lomond
districts.

London
After students travel to
London by train, they will visit various health care agencies and world
famous museums such as the Florence Nightingale Museum.
Participants will also experience classic tourist attractions including
the Tower of London, the famous Underground subway system, the changing
of the guard at Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey. |
Meals and Accommodations
While in the United Kingdom,
students will be provided with two meals a day. Students will have
multiple opportunities to explore and try the local cuisine. While in
Edinburgh and London, students will share hotels rooms with other
students on the program.
Orientation
A pre-departure orientation is
offered during Fall Quarter by the University Center for International
Education before travel to the United Kingdom

Cost and Enrollment Deadlines

Cost of the program is $2000.
This includes housing, two meals per day, and health and accident
insurance. Not included are passport application costs, tuition,
airfare and some ground transportation fees, souvenirs, personal
expenses, activities on free days and evenings, and some meals.
A 2.5 GPA is required
of all participants. A non-refundable application fee of $50 and a
refundable deposit of $250 are due at the time of application. All
persons applying are encouraged to submit an application by April 15,
2008. The final payment of $1750 is due by October 1, 2008. Wright State
University financial aid is applicable to this program.

About the Professors
Both professors for this
course are committed to the advancement of global health as a focus in
nursing. In an effort to achieve increased contact between Wright State
University nursing students and other nursing students and professionals
around the world, Drs. Curry and Gray have developed cross-cultural
nursing student activities and experiences with several foreign colleges
of nursing.
Donna Curry, PhD, RN has
collaborated with nurses in such places as the United Kingdom, Italy,
Chile, Mexico, Canada, Japan, Sweden and Thailand. She is an Associate
Professor in the College of Nursing and Health.
Bobbe Gray, PhD, RNC has had
the privilege of living in the United Kingdom and has engaged in many
opportunities for professional interaction with British nurses. She is
an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing and Health. |
