About
Program
The
Summer Ambassador Program to Austria will cover Austrian culture in
comparison to the United States and Austrian business.
Students will be based in the three major cities in Austria: Vienna,
Salzburg and Graz. They will have the opportunity to explore these
cities and the surrounding areas in order to practice speaking
German and learn about Austrian culture, history, and life through
discussions with university students and members of the political
and economic community. |
Academic Credit
This program will cover
Austrian culture in comparison to the United States and Austrian
business. The prerequisite for this program is GER 103-203 or the
equivalent, which can be 3-4 years of German in high school, a previous
immersion experience, or a combination. Students will register for one
4-credit hour class, GER 399 or ML 309, as an independent study.
While in Austria, student will
meet daily for a one hour class instruction, attend on-site lectures,
keep a daily journal, record and share new vocabulary and cultural
observations in a small notebook. After the program, students will have
two weeks to turn in a final paper.
Student will get the
opportunity to explore the cities on their own during free days.

Vienna
Vienna, the capital city of Austria, is
the cultural, political, and economic center. Art and culture have a
long tradition in Vienna including theatre, opera, fine arts, and of
course classical music. In Vienna, students will visit Parliament,
talk to representatives, go to the opera, visit historical sites,
and go on other excursions. There will also be the possibility of
visiting neighboring countries.

Graz
Graz, the second largest city in Austria, is a
considered a college town with nearly 40,000 students. Due to its location
between Central Europe, Italy, and the Balkan States, Graz absorbed various
influences from the neighboring regions. In Graz, students will have a chance to
see some sporting events, tour the beautiful historic city, visit local
businesses, go on a camping trip, hike through the surrounding area, and meet
with Austrian students to practice their German and learn more about Austria. |
Salzburg
Explore Mozart’s
birthplace, sip coffee in one of Austrian’s best coffee houses, tour the
salt mines and learn about the salt industry in Salzburg after taking a
100-foot-slide down the 480-years-old salt mines. |
Orientation
The University Center for International
Education will hold a pre-departure orientation during the spring
quarter. Students will also be required to attend a mandatory 3-day
pre-trip orientation in order for the students to learn history and
background of Austria and some major differences from the United States.
This will also give students an opportunity to meet before departure. |
Meals and Accommodations

While in Austria, accommodations will be a combination
of hotels, campgrounds, and host families. One or two meals will be
included in the cost of the program. Students will have opportunities to
explore the different types of cuisines found in each city.

Cost and
Enrollment Deadlines
Cost of the program is $2,900.00.
This includes round-trip airfare from Dayton, transportation between
cities, some museum passes, housing, one or two meals per day, health
and accident insurance. Not included are passport application costs,
tuition, souvenirs, personal expenses, activities on free days and
evenings, and some meals.
A 2.5 GPA is required of all participants. A non-refundable
application fee of $50 and a refundable deposit of $250 are
due at the time of application. All persons applying must submit
an application by January 11, 2008. All fees are due by April
7, 2008. Wright State University financial aid is applicable to this
program.

About the Professors
Elfe Dona, Ph.D., is assistant professor of
German at Wright State University and a native of Austria. She is the
winner of the 2005 Wright State University President’s Award for
Excellence: Outstanding Instructor, and teaches courses varying from
German language classes, to advanced literature, to German business
courses. Dr. Dona’s research interests include: Twentieth century
literature and culture, German-American ethnic studies and language
pedagogy.

Ronald Tschech (MBA) works in a company which organizes seminars for
representatives of the Austrian parliament. He has studied International
Business Administration at the University of Vienna and will assist
Professor Dona with the organization of the trip.
