GOAL:  To help students acquire the skills necessary to be successful in their academic work.

OBJECTIVES:         The student will be able to:

    1. Set appropriate and realistic personal, educational, and career goals,
    2. Become familiar with the university library,
    3. Demonstrate the ability to use an effective notetaking system,
    4. Apply appropriate retraining strategies for effective listening,
    5. Demonstrate the ability to create questions for review,
    6. Develop and follow an effective time schedule,
    7. Develop strategies for managing stress at an appropriate level,
    8. Demonstrate the ability to use an effective textbook reading system,
    9. Demonstrate the ability to use good testtaking strategies.

GRADING SYSTEM:  Pass (P) or Unsatisfactory (U) based on earning a minimum of 250 points out of a possible 300+.

1.    Attendance: Only 2 absences permitted. Missed classes can be made up within one week of the absence by watching (in my office), and taking notes over, a video of the missed class. The notes must be turned in for credit.

2.    Assignments: 275+ points possible, point values are listed with each assignment. Any assignment, with the exception of the assignment done on the first day may be turned in late for half credit.

  When turning in assignments via e-mail, include your name, and class day and time in both the body of the message, and the subject line.

3.   Final Exam: 100 points possible

CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE:  Drinks are permitted, but please do not bring in food, cell phones, or pagers. If you want to use a computer or taperecorder to take notes, that is fine, but do not use your computer for games or e-mailing during class. If you want to visit with your friends, please do so before or after class, not during!

b.   Goal setting: What are the qualities of a good student? (what does a good student do?) Make a list of 10 items and e-mail to me before class 2 (10 points) Due before class 2

d.  Time management assignments:

Class 2:              Note taking

b.  While viewing the Stress Lecture video ,take notes using the Cornell System. (5 points) Due class 4

c.   Make up 10 test questions based on the lecture. (10 points) Due class 4

d.  Take notes in a different class using the Cornell System. (20 points) Due class 4

e.  Make up 10 test questions based on that lecture. (10 points) Due class 4

f.   Immediate Review - Inductive vs Deductive. Do an immediate review after two class lectures, one using inductive reasoning, the other using deductive. Write a reaction paper describing which worked better for you and why. (25 points) Due Class 5

c. Prepare 25 3x5 cards for review study (25 points) Due class 8

d.   Make up mnemonic devices for information in your classes (5pts each up to 20) due class 8

 

Class 4:             Time Management

b. Take a few learning styles inventories; write a reaction paper analyzing the results (do they match with what you about how you learn?) (25 points) Due class 8

 

 

Class 5:             Time Management

a.   Read textbook reading web page

Class 7:           SQ3R

a.  Complete SQ3R activities: Due by class 10

Pick a chapter you need to read for one of your classes and complete the following activities with that chapter.

b.  Make up 10 test questions you think will be on your final exam in this class(10 points) Due class 9

c.   Make up 10 test questions from one of your other classes(10 points) Due class 10
