ORGANIZATION---Look at the way the chapter is organized. Are there any patterns? Typical patterns of organization include: Analytic, Cause--Effect, Definition, Descriptive, Enumeration, Expository, Narrative, Problem--Solution, Question and answer, Spatial, Sequential--Chronological or Instructional, and Thesis--Proof.

ILLUSTRATIVE MATERIAL---Look through the chapter for charts, graphs, pictures, maps, etc. Read the captions.

 

SUMMARY---Read the summary or last paragraph of the chapter.

 

QUESTIONS

VOCABULARY --- Look through the chapter for unfamiliar words. They may be in italics, in bold print, in the margins, or listed at the beginning or end of the chapter. Do you know their meanings? If not you may be slowed up in your speed and comprehension. It might be helpful to find out their meanings before you start to read.

 

Question/Read/Recite

Turn back to the beginning of your chapter. Read the first heading and look at the questions you made up. Now read to the next heading and STOP. Look away from the book and RECITE OUT LOUD the answers to your questions. Write the answer in the space below that corresponds to your question.
