2007 Honors Learning Communities
In Honors Learning Communities, 20 first-year Honors students register for the same two or three courses and a linking seminar. Taking classes in tandem hels students make new friends quickly - and in Honors Learning Communities, these friends are likely to share your drive for academic excellence. The linking seminar meets for one or two hours per week for discussion of common themes, problems, or agendas. Students receive separate grades for the courses, although some assignments may be coordinated. Honors students participating in a learning community are often able to meet an entire year's requirement of Honors courses within their first quarter. Most students in the learning community take one or two additional courses to complete their full-time loads.

Honors Learning Communities facilitate deep learning by helping students make connections with each other - and connections between the disciplines they are studying. Students in learning communities also get to know their instructors on a much more personal level. Students who have participated in the past report that they learned to take responsibility for their own education and to discover and invent. They felt broadened by the experience. In this setting they were able to learn about themselves as well as the course content.
