Performing Facilities

The Wright State University Department of Theatre Arts boasts three different performing spaces. Each are distinctive; each facilitate a wide range of performance opportunities for WSU students.

The Festival Playhouse

The main season of five productions, as well as dance concerts, are presented on the stage of the Festival Playhouse. This modern facility, completed in 1974, contains a large main stage comparable to many Broadway and regional theatres, offstage wings and storage areas, and a hydraulically adjusted orchestra pit. The main auditorium of the Festival Playhouse seats 376 on the main floor and balcony and is wheelchair accessible. This facility has been praised for its comfort and unobstructed sight lines, while preserving the feeling of intimacy appropriate for educational performances.

The Dorothy M. and Isabel Herbst Theatre

The second performing space is a large, flexible performing facility, the Dorothy M. and Isabel Herbst Theatre. This unique space, often called a "black box" theatre, is intended to permit an infinite number of actor/audience configurations, including proscenium, three-quarter-thrust, and in-the-round. Renovations of the Dorothy M. and Isabel Herbst Theatre in the fall of 1996 have further enhanced the outstanding features of this marvelous performing facility.

The Directing Lab

The third performing space is the Directing Lab, an intimate, 92-seat proscenium theatre which is made available to any theatre arts major interested in rehearsing and presenting his/her own theatrical production. This modern, fully-equipped theatre has facilitated a variety of productions - from modern dramas to one-person shows, from musical revues to original scripts.

Together, these performing facilities offer students enrolled in the WSU Theatre Arts degree programs hundreds of opportunities as actors, dancers, directors, musicians, designers, stage managers, and technicians. The three theatres have been heralded as unique performing spaces for undergraduate programs nationwide.
