Motion Picture Production Program Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree
The motion picture Production Program combines intensive work in film production with studies in theory, history, and criticism of motion pictures, as well as studies in related media. The production program is professionally oriented and can directly to careers in film or related fields, or to further studies at the graduate level.
Motion Picture Theory, History, and Criticism Program, Bachelor of Arts Degree
The motion picture Theory, History, and Criticism Program is a liberal arts program combining concentrated study in film analysis, history, criticism, authorship, and genre with classes in production and ample electives for students to choose related studies in other departments. Through the B.A. program, students may prepare directly for careers in film-related fields or for further study at the graduate level.
Special Courses
The basic quarterly courses in film production and history are supplemented each quarter by specialty upper-level courses covering a variety of areas. Examples of course subjects include Hollywood blacklisting, melodrama and feminism, Italian neorealism, gay film, the film noir, screenwriting, cinematography, Woody Allen, John Ford, the Motion Picture production code, experimental video art, etc. Students are thus able to explore new film topics each quarter.
Studios and Facilities
The motion picture area was chosen by The Independent, the leading periodical of the independent filmmaker, as one of only nine national schools to offer superior training in an independent film environment. The motion picture area was also recognized as one of Ohio's outstanding undergraduate programs when it won a $150,000 Program Excellence Award from the Governor of Ohio and the Ohio Board of Regents, as well as a series of follow-up grants which have enabled the purchase of additional equipment and resources for the area. With the completion of the Creative Arts Center expansion, the motion picture area has a state-of-the-arts complex, which includes dedicated digital editing systems for 16mm film and video, a sound mixing theatre and sound studio, an equipment room stocked with equipment, a production classroom, and screenings rooms, among other spaces. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the generous open hours of the facilities, as well as the screening rooms and the comprehensive DVD collection of classic films for film study. State-of-the-art equipment can be signed out by students for their productions in 16mm film and high-end video.
Degree Requirements
The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre with a major in motion picture production requires the completion of 192 credit hours distributed in the following manner: 70 credit hours in motion pictures, 27-31 hours in related requirements, 35-39 hours of elective courses, and 56 hours of general education.
The Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre with a major in motion picture history, theory, and criticism requires the completion of 192 credit hours distributed in the following manner: 52 credit hours in motion pictures, 16-20 hours in related requirements, 28-32 hours of elective courses, 36 hours of foreign language, 56 hours of general education courses and research options.
