Admission Standards

Admission to the first-year level design/technology program is open to any interested students. Students wishing to enter the program at the sophomore level or above must schedule an interview and/or portfolio presentation with the design/technology faculty prior to the first day of classes. Admission to the proper placement in the program is at the discretion of the faculty, based on the interview and the quality of the student's portfolio.

Design/technology auditions will consist of a 15-20 minute interview with the design/technology faculty. During this time you will be given an opportunity to show evidence of your past accomplishments in design or technical theatre. Please bring evidence of your talents and accomplishments, such as sketches, drawings and other art works, photographs of sets with which you were involved, technical drawings, or organizational materials. Be prepared to explain your contribution to the finished product.

Students interested in the design/technology program may interview for scholarships. Contact Victoria Oleen, at victoria.oleen@wright.edu for upcoming scholarship interview dates.

All design/technology majors must undergo a portfolio evaluation at the end of each year's study. Retention in the program and acceptance into the sophomore year of study is based on: (1) maintenance of an overall grade point average of 2.0; (2) the continued growth of the student as determined by the faculty; and (3) the successful completion of the portfolio evaluation at the end of each year of study. Before students can begin their junior or senior year they must have a 2.5 grade point average in all design and technology classes and an overall grade point average of 2.25. Placement of junior- and senior-year students into the design, technology, or stage management concentrations is at the discretion of the faculty.

Students must also continue to show steady growth in their craft. Students must demonstrate leadership skills and self-discipline and show promise of benefitting from continued training. Any student whose overall grade point average falls below 2.25 will be suspended from production, graphics, and design classes, and from using facilities until the grade point average is raised. The faculty reserves the right to totally suspend from a program any student who does not fulfill these continuing requirements. Students not performing in their academic or production assignments will be advised to leave the program.
