Admissions Standards
Auditions/interviews are required for admittance into the BFA program in dance. The same audition/interview is used in determining Theatre Arts Talent Scholarship awards. Talent scholarships are usually awarded for one year to students in acting, dance, motion picture production, and design/technology. All majors are eligible to apply each year for Merit Scholarships.
The Dance Program is designed to attract serious and highly motivated students who seek professional careers in dance. Acceptance into the WSU Dance Program is contingent upon the successful completion of an on-campus audition. Auditions are offered twice a year and include a ballet barre followed by center combinations in ballet, modern, and jazz. Notification of dance audition dates will be sent upon request. All transfer students are required to audition for acceptance and placement. Photographs are required for all those auditioning in dance. If unusual circumstances prevent you from keeping your appointment, please contact the Department of Theatre Arts. A VHS videotape may be submitted in lieu of a personal audition, although it is not recommended.
Students interested in auditioning for the WSU/Dayton Ballet II program and/or the WSU/Dayton Contemporary Dance Company II program must submit a videotape two weeks prior to the audition. Contact Victoria Oleen for additional information.
To remain in the Dance Program, students must demonstrate continual growth as judged by the dance faculty, maintain a 2.5 grade point average in all dance courses, and maintain a 2.0 overall grade point average. Juries are given at the end of each quarter for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Seniors have a final jury at the end of their fall quarter. Students must earn a positive recommendation by the dance faculty before they can enroll for the next level of training.
