Senior Project

In the senior year, acting majors may elect to present a one-person show (or monodrama) as a first attempt at creating, performing, and producing their own work. In the one-person show, students select a topic or idea, perhaps research the subject, write the script, and then assemble a production team and perform the piece in the Directing Lab for a public audience.

Students may also choose to perform a previously existing monodrama or an anthology of short cuttings. The monodrama teaches the acting student how to become immersed in a subject and to select those elements that are dramatically valuable. It teaches students how to organize material and write exciting dialogue. These solo performances are an exciting and valuable theatrical experience for the performers. A number of graduates have successfully mounted professional productions of their one-person shows.

Instead of the monodrama, seniors may also choose to participate in a class preparing them for a showcase trip to New York. This class will assist students in the selection and preparation of a wide range of audition materials and in the development of the actors' presentation, and will culminate in a trip which includes a presentation for agents and casting directors
