What is RecycleMania?
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Gina Reese, who oversees the Wright State University recycling program as the Department Manager, Environmental/Custodial Services commented that help is needed from students, faculty and staff. She stated that, “Wright State University is currently participating a 10 week national recycling competition against 624 colleges and universities, and we encourage their support in helping Wright State University to be in the top 50.”
Over a 10-week period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. With each week's reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more waste.
During the past three years, Wright State has participated amongst colleges and universities nationally in this 10-week RecycleMania Per Capita Classic competition. The competition measures all cardboard, paper, plastics, and aluminum recycled during this period. We collected 65,413 lbs in 2007 and increased to 82,144 lbs in 2008 and remained at 82,102 lbs in 2009.
With our comingled recycling program in place for almost 5 months, Wright State University was registered in the "Grand Champion" Division of the 2010 RecycleMania competition that ran from January 17 through March 27 competing against 267 colleges and universities nationwide. Recycling 102,556 lbs. of materials within this 10-week period placed Wright State University 123rd nationwide. Wright State University ranked 7th out of 15 participating universities in the state (and we Know we can do Much better than that!).
ROWDY RAIDER RECYCLES, REUSES AND REDUCES!
Each year Wright State University has inched up in the standings but this year we are setting a goal to be in the top 3 institutions in Ohio. This is a national event on hundreds of campuses competing for top honors. Our goal is do-able but of course, we need you to RECYCLE! RECYCLE! RECYCLE! Every bit helps—less trash going to the landfill and more materials recycled back into new uses— And we come out way up at the top of the standings! It is a Win-Win-Win!
RecycleMania 2011 runs from February 6 to April 2, 2011.

Starting January 23, we will begin collecting recycled materials for a Trial Run. Tips for participating and tracking information about the last two week’s trial period will be posted soon—check here for links.
Now that we have comingled recycling in place, it pretty much means that anything that is clean (Not food contaminated)—paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, metal—can be tossed in your friendly Raider GreenSpot recycle containers. For example, you can rise out those yogurt cups or toss the waxed paper lining and brush the crumbs out of the big pizza box and recycle those too.
We need you to get involved and to encourage others to participate too. Many of us bring recycle materials from home, work, the gym, anywhere, everywhere, (whatever it takes to fill those recycle bins). We need to reach our goal to be in the top three in Ohio. You involvement makes a difference, so get recycling!
Why ROWDY RAIDER RECYCLES, REUSES AND REDUCES!
You name it—Rowdy is concerned about resource depletion, too much trash, replacing still useable items (check out the Story of Stuff), landfills, litter, overconsumption and waste.
Let’s pitch in together to reach our Goal for RecycleMania 2011!
