Questions you might ask a potential employer
The interview is your opportunity to learn more about the
position, the school, and the department you are considering. You’re not just
looking for the school that will have you, you’re looking for a good fit; a
program that fits your philosophy and will meet your needs as a professional.
Most interviews will provide you with an opportunity to ask questions during the
interview. If you do not have any questions, it may look as if you don’t
care/haven’t prepared or are not discriminate in your job search. Before heading
into an interview, write down a list of things you would honestly want to know
about a school or job. Decide which things would be appropriate to ask during an
interview and work to phrase your questions carefully. Some sample questions
include:
1. Can you tell me a little more about the staff structure in your program?
2. What kind of a staff development programs do you offer?
3. What can you tell me about the community of ___ (city)_______?
4. In what ways is your program growing?
5. What opportunities might I have for committee involvement?
6. What challenges are currently facing your department/institution?
7. What kind of training would I be given for this position?
8. What qualities are you looking for in a candidate?
9. Can you tell me about the hiring time line for this position?
10. How do you describe the students in you school?
11. What percentage of your students are minority? What programs and services do
you provide to address their needs?
12. What attracted you to _____________ College/University?
13. What are the things you like most about working here? What are some things
you would change?
14. What is the next step after this position?
15. If you could change one thing about your institution what would it be?
16. How does the University/residence life office involve you in decisions?
17. How would you describe the campus climate at the University?
18. What are you looking to accomplish with me as your (position title)?
19. What tpes of customer service initiatives have you implemented to address
student needs?
