On Saturday, October 2, the Club Raiders headed to Grand Rapids for a tournament. On a very cold and windy morning, the team began the tournament with a game against Purdue. In the 8th minute of the game, WSU received a red card and continued playing one man down. With only two subs due to injuries, the team went to a 1-0 lead at halftime. Starting keeper Shane Page made many saves during the first half. In the second half another red card was issued on a questionable call from the center ref. This led to a two-man down team late in the second half. Trying to overcome the loss to the team, the remaining guys played extremely hard. Eventually, the game ended in a Purdue win of 2-1. The lone Raider goal was scored by starting striker Matt Jaruwannakorn. Later that day, with the loss of two red carded athletes, the Club entered the Grand Valley State game with no subs. Goalkeeper Dave Kennedy played 75 minutes for the team as an outside midfielder. Dave played very well and helped keep the game close. The team played hard and the game was 0-0 at half. Early in the second half an injured Dave Castel entered the game and scored to give the Raiders the lead. Dave re-entered the game later to tie the game at 2-2. Having no subs proved too tough when GVSU went up 3-2. In the final minutes of the game, a very tired Raider team was scored on two more times with the final score 5-2. Obviously had the team had their subs in addition to the three who had to stay home due to injuries, both games would have ended differently. On Sunday, the rested Raiders came out hungry for a win. Continuing without subs, the Raiders ended up with a hard fought win over Ferris State with the score of 3-1. Dan Griest came through with two big goals in addition to one from Derrick Sendi. Overall, it was a very tough weekend for the team. Next up is the University of Dayton this coming weekend.
Sunday, October 10. In a late game with cross-town rival UD, the Raiders played hard but settled for 0-0 tie. Goalkeeper Sean Williams made some amazing saves to keep the Flyers scoreless. Many of the Club Raiders had shots on goal, but just couldn't seem to put one in. Next weekend will be a big division tournament at WSU.
On Saturday, October 16, the Raiders began a big league weekend with Ohio University. This game is always a big contest and this one proved to be the same. Matt Jaruwannakorn scored first on ball deflected off OU's keeper, from a powerful shot from Mike Blair. OU's offense came back with a vengeance and scored three goals. WSU keeper Sean Williams made five saves, but the final ended up as a loss for WSU 3-1 .
Sunday turned out to be a much different
day. Still bitter from the loss to OU, the Raiders came out playing hard in
a division match with rival Xavier. The Raiders beat hard on Xavier with the
final score 9-0. Following is a scoring recap: Sunday night in a game played under the lights on Alumni Field, the Raiders won a decisive division game with University of Cincinnati 5-1. Brent Alting scored first in the 13th minute with an assist from Greg Smith. In the 27th minute, a player from UC was red carded and removed from the game. Capitalizing on UC playing a man down, Dave Castel scored in the 38th and 40th minutes with assists both times from Dan Griest. Starting keeper Sean Williams kept UC scoreless in the first half. After the half, Matt Jaruwannakorn scored twice in 5 minutes assisted by Ryan Azuogu and Dan Griest. UC scored in the 86th minute from a corner kick. Keeper Shane Page played a great second half with three critical saves and only allowing the one goal. The Raiders will end the regular season this weekend with a big game against rival Miami.
