Bicycle, Skateboard, Roller Skate, Roller Blade, and Scooter Regulations

Bicycle Regulations

  1. General Regulations
    All bicycle riders are required to comply with the State of Ohio motor vehicle laws and are subject to penalties as defined by the Ohio Revised Code.
  2. Operation of Bicycles
    1. Persons operating bicycles on university-owned or university-managed property are expected to keep bicycles in safe operating condition. All riders need reflectors and a headlight one-half hour before sunset and until one-half hour after sunrise.
    2. Bicycle riders are encouraged to ride with the traffic flow on roads designated for motor vehicles, but may utilize service drives and main pedestrian routes with caution, yielding to pedestrian right of way in these areas.
    3. Bicycle riders must abide by traffic control devices, signs, and markings.
    4. Bicycle riding is not permitted on grass or inside buildings and/or tunnels.
    5. Bicycle riders must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians.
  3. Parking of Bicycles
    1. Bicycles must be parked in bicycle racks. Bicycles shall not be parked in campus buildings (except student residence hall rooms) or locked on trees, lamp posts, fences, handrails, etc.
    2. Bicycles must not be parked in a manner that hinders safe flow of pedestrian or vehicular traffic.
    3. Bicycles parked in violation of this section may be removed by the university and their owners fined.
  4. Penalties for Bicycle Owners and Operators
    1. Traffic offenses (i.e., speeding, traveling wrong way on roadway, disregarding traffic control devices, failure to yield to a pedestrian, etc.) $20 for each offense, reduced by $5 if paid within seven days of Vehicle Violation Notice.
    2. Failure to have appropriate safety devices (brakes in working order, reflectors, light, safe tires, etc.) $10 for each offense
    3. Parking improperly (see section III) $10 for each offense
    4. Hazardous operation (reckless operation) $20 for each offense

Skateboard, Roller Skate, Roller Blade, and Scooter Regulations

Skateboards, roller blades, roller skates and scooters are permitted on university-owned property in accordance with regulations for bicycle operation, except that skateboards, roller blades, roller skates and scooters may not be used in areas of motor vehicle congestion, motor vehicle traffic lanes, or other areas of campus where these activities are restricted by signs.
