University Honors Program

The University Honors Program is a comprehensive, university-wide effort to enhance the undergraduate experience for Wright State's brightest, hardest working, most ambitious, and most creative students. From Honors sections of General Education courses to interdisciplinary seminars for juniors and seniors, the program offers a stimulating and challenging alternative academic program. Small classes populated by capable and highly motivated students and led by dedicated, dynamic instructors inevitably produce a good learning environment. Honors classes emphasize student participation through discussions, group projects, and presentations. Service-learning classes are offered regularly. Reading, writing, and thinking skills receive especially close attention in Honors classes. Honors classes don't necessarily mean more work, but rather a different kind of work. Students tend to earn the same grades in Honors classes that they do in their other courses.

To Apply

Students may apply for admission to the University Honors Program at any time during the school year. Applications are available from the University Honors Program Office, 243 Millett Hall; University College, 180 University Hall; or on-line at www.wright.edu/academics/honors. First-year students who meet any two of the following three criteria will be accepted into the program: (1) high school GPA of at least 3.25, (2) rank in the top 10 percent of graduating class, (3) score on the ACT or SAT in the 90th percentile or higher. Continuing or transfer students should have a college GPA of at least 3.0. Students who do not meet these criteria may supply other information that would predict successful performance in Honors classes.

To Register

Information about Honors classes is available on WINGS Express. Additionally, a list of Honors classes and registration information is e-mailed each quarter to active Honors students. Those who are actively pursuing Honors degrees have priority registration.

To Graduate with Honors

Students who complete any eight Honors courses with an A or B in a combination that includes at least one course from the UH201, 202, 203 sequence; at least two other general education courses; and two 400-level Honors seminars; and who satisfy departmental or college Honors program requirements will graduate as University Honors Scholars.

Students who earn A's or B's in eight Honors courses in the distribution described above and maintain an overall GPA of at least 3.5 (for students entering Fall 2006) will graduate as General Studies Honors Scholars.

To earn Departmental Honors, students must complete the requirements of their particular major. Departmental Honors projects usually involve conducting research under the direction of a faculty mentor. Consult the Honors office for more detailed information about individual departmental Honors requirements.

All Honors designations are recorded on your transcript and listed in the commencement program.

Additional Opportunities

The University Honors Program offers students many co-curricular opportunities to build their social, communication, and leadership skills. The two student organizations affiliated with the University Honors Program, the Student Honors Association and Phi Kappa Phi, are active on campus and in the community. Parties, student/faculty mixers, trips, service projects, and fund raisers keep the membership busy. Wright State Honors students are regular participants in the Mid East Honors Association annual conference, where they often present workshops and routinely win awards at the talent show.

The Honors Community is an attractive option for campus living. It features an electronic classroom, a 25-station computer lab, a convenience store, hair salon, coffee shop and fitness center. The building also houses a kitchen, TV lounge and game room.

Special programming and advising is provided by the Honors Faculty-in-Residence who lives in the building.

Scholarships

The University Honors Program offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for continuing students. News about deadlines and requirements is available from the Honors Office. Opportunities are announced on the Honors student e-mail lists, in the Honors Community and through the Financial Aid Office.
