Wright State University Athletics

Academic Services

Academic Advising
Athletics academic advising through Wright State University Athletics serves as a supplemental advising service to each student-athlete. Student-athletes have a university-assigned advisor in their specific college. The Athletic Academic Services staff work in partnership with faculty advisors, department chairs, and deans to ensure a unified approach to academic advising for student-athletes. Our office supports all student-athletes in areas including, but not limited to:
  • major/minor selection
  • course selection and offerings
  • connection to campus resources
  • time management development
  • balancing the rigorous demands of academics with the demand of their sport
  • study skill development
  • test taking strategies
Learning Specialist
The learning specialist provides organizational support and individualized academic support to student-athletes who have a need for additional academic support. The learning specialist also serves as the liaison for the Wright State University [Office of Disability Services][ http://www.wright.edu/students/dis_services/].

Study Tables
All new Wright State student-athletes are required to get 8 study table hours per week during their first semester. After the first semester at Wright State, study table requirements are determined by sport and team philosophy.
Study table locations and hours are listed [here].

Travel Letters
Travel letters are provided to all student-athletes to distribute to their professors. The letters include all dates and times the student-athletes will miss class due to travel for competition. Travel letters are provided at the beginning of the semester for student-athletes whose sport is currently in season. Travel letters also allow student-athletes to take part in conversations with their professors regarding their athletic participation and the impact on class progress (i.e., missed class, assignments, exams, etc.). Every effort is made to reschedule missed exams when necessary or tests are also proctored on road trips when required.

Tutoring
Free tutoring is available to all student-athletes. Tutoring Services has tutors for 1000-2000 level courses. Athletic Academic Services will also hire tutors for other subjects or upper level courses upon request. The Student Success Center on Wright State's campus has a Math Learning Center for all math tutoring and a Writing Center for help with academic papers. Supplemental Instruction for common core courses is also available each semester for students.
