SAA Meeting Minutes
11/6/06
Rachel DeHart

In attendance: Garret Kremer-Wright, Aja Ash, Collette Hill, Natalie
Fritz, Rachel DeHart, Lisa Pasquinelli, Lynda Kachurek, Toni Jeske

Upcoming Events:

1. Winter Break plans: an informal trip to the Cincinnati Museum
Center and the UC Archives is being planned for a Saturday in
December.  Contact Natalie Fritz if interested.

2. February 16 or 17 (Friday or Saturday), 2007: possible trip to
Indianapolis to IUPUI Archives and the Children’s museum.

Announcements:

1. Derek Freed graduated this quarter and Rachel DeHart replaced him
as Secretary.

2. Three new officers’ positions will be available next year,
including President and Treasurer.  Also, several of our members will
be graduating in June, so encourage new members to join!

3. 2007 professional conferences to be aware of: SAA Conference in
Chicago (deadline in June/July); MAC/SOA joint conference.  Poster
sessions at these conferences are a great way to market yourself and
gain experience.  To participate, you must submit a proposal, prepare
a poster on an archival research topic, and be available to answer
questions.

Ideas:

1. Possible activities for next quarter: archives games to coordinate
with March Madness; guest speakers; professional development.

2. We brainstormed about starting a local mentor program that would
pair WS graduate students with archivists in the field.

3. Fundraising and membership: Collette is looking into designing SAA
t-shirts to sell; Natalie is researching merchandise for giveaways to
encourage membership in our chapter and to provide our members with
added benefits; Rachel is contacting the Wright Copy shop for
information on promotional items for student organizations, such as
bookmarks and flyers. Other ideas include selling cookbooks and
calendars complete with quotes, photos, links to online projects (like
American Memory), and conservation tips.

4. Promotion: we discussed contributing SAA information to the Public
History packets that go out to prospective and incoming students from
the History Department.  We also decided to take the responsibility of
informing new students about the benefits of joining SAA, particularly
book discounts; we will create cost comparison lists with ordering
information.

5.  We want to explore the option of joint activities with nearby
student chapters, such as Kent State.  We also talked about sending
gifts to other student chapters to get our name out.
