Wright State University Society of American Archivist Meeting Minutes

October 2, 2006

Member Roll Call: Garret Kremer-Wright – President, Collette Hill – Vice President, Natalie Fritz – Treasurer, Derek Freed – Secretary, Toni Jeski – Advisor, Lisa Pasquinelli, Aja Ash, Rachel DeHart.

ü     SAA/MAC/SOA – Garret asked who current members of each group are.  The four officers and Rachel DeHart were present members of SAA while no one belonged to MAC or SOA.

ü     House of Representatives Meeting – Garret asked for volunteers to attend the meeting on October 11, 2006.   Garret and Derek volunteered themselves to participate. 

ü     SAA Student Listserv – Garret notified the present members of the advantages of joining SAA and the benefits, particularly with regards to the listserv.  The website can be located at www.archivist.org  The web page provides the latest information concerning archives, national job postings, discounts to members on books used in the graduate program, a mentor program and other information valuable to any archivists.

ü     WSUSAA’s website, located at www.wright.edu/studentorgs/saa  Garret asked Lisa if she would be willing to help upgrade the organizations web page.  Lisa agreed to the appointment.

ü     Ohio Historical Society Conference, October 5-7, 2006 – Garret informed the members of the upcoming conference and was notified by both Natalie and Lisa that they had plans to attend the conference this weekend.

ü     Etiquette Dinner, October 19, 2006 – Deadline for applications are October 12, 2006.   Garret informed the members that it was $40 a table.  Toni added that the process was a good experience as it would help prepare upcoming graduates the proper etiquette for luncheons and dinners during an interview.

ü     Indianapolis Joint Trip – Natalie and Collette discussed the possibility of a joint trip between WSUSAA and Phi Alpha Theta/History Club to Indianapolis to visit an archives or the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.   The process is in the early planning stages and a more concrete decision will be made at the next meeting.  Toni informed us she knew someone at IUPUI that might be able to set something up.

ü     MAC/SOA Joint Spring Conference (posters, registration, t-shirts?) – Discussion of the spring conference covered the possibility of students entering posters on projects or a table to sell t-shirts to raise funds.  Toni advised all present of the positive benefits of attending the conference as it prepares students for professional conferences and also helps the student network with other area archivists.

ü     Tomorrow Counts – Natalie informed the group of a volunteer opportunity at Greene County middle schools.   Tomorrow Counts is a tutor/mentor program for local middle school children.  Please contact Natalie for more details.

ü     Huffman Prairie Aviation History Society meeting with Lynda Kachurek – 7:30 p.m. in room 315, Dunbar.   Lynda will be discussing her work from an oral history project concerning the Cold War.  The Huffman Prairie Aviation History Society meets on the first Monday of each month and has speakers for each month that presents lectures on a variety of topics.
