Rowdy 'Round Town

Rowdy Raider 04

Rowdy 'Round Town was a community art project benefiting Wright State University student organizations. The Raider mascot, Rowdy, came to life as a five foot replica.  Each student organization worked with a Dayton area artist to create an original work of art. The completed Rowdy statues were placed in prominent locations throughout the Miami Valley during summer 2004.

SAA WSU used decoupage with photographs representing important dates and events throughout Wright State's history.  We would like to thank the University Archives in the Dunbar Library for aiding us in accessing and reproducing the photographs. Our Rowdy statue was successfully auctioned and can now be seen in the Student Union.

Society of Ohio Archivists' Spring Conference 2004

“Exploration” was the theme of this year’s S.O.A. Spring Conference, held in Columbus, April 15-16.  Drawing on the anniversary of the Lewis & Clark Expedition for inspiration, the conference included presentations that touched on explorations of many varieties: physical, intellectual, and spiritual.  Three Wright State University archivists (Dawne Dewey, Jane Wildermuth, and Toni Jeske) and six Public History graduate students (Michael Arbagi, Steve Lucht,  Andrea Rice, Kim Richards, Andrea Spence, and Tim Binkley) attended, making W.S.U. the most represented institution at the conference.

In a panel presentation titled, “Archives and / or Museums: Exploring the Public History Dilemma,” the W.S.U. graduate students shared their vocational interests and the academic choices they are making as they journey toward employment as archivists, records managers, curators, interpreters, and historical or archival organization directors.  After the presenters concluded their remarks, a general discussion took place between the students and professionals in the field.  Topics of debate included M.L.S. / M.L.I.S. degrees, certified archivist status, the diversity of student interests, and the flexibility of W.S.U.’s Public History Program.

Transcripts of the student remarks are available through the W.S.U. Student Chapter of the Society of American Archivists.

2005 Annual Report

This year was the first full year for the Wright State University chapter of The Society of American Archivists. While the student chapter is open to all university students, Wright State graduate students earning a Master’s in History with a concentration in public history (museum and archival studies) comprise most of the membership. This year the chapter focused on activities with practical application in the field.

Activities included:

  • Year long: Several students represented WSU SAA at the monthly local archives roundtable.
  • October 2004: Completed the university’s mascot design contest similar to the Chicago cows or the Cincinnati pigs. The statue went up for auction in October, and the chapter received $500. The statue is now on display in the university’s student union.
  • November 2004: The WSU SAA President presented on the formation and progress of the WSU SAA chapter to the Miami Valley Archives Roundtable.
  • February 2005: WSU SAA held a MARC workshop attended by students and alumni
  • March 2005: The WSU SAA chapter selected officers for the 2005-2006 academic year.
  • April 2005: WSU SAA held a Disaster Recovery workshop
  • April 2005: Several members participated in the Society of Ohio Archivists spring conference. The students chaired sessions and participated in a student poster session. All three poster session awards went to WSU SAA members. The WSU SAA chapter paid the registration fee for the WSU students who participated in the poster session. The chapter also contributed a WSU gift basket for the silent auction.
  • April 2005: Through the generosity of a WSU SAA founding member, the chapter awarded a $250 scholarship to assist a SAA member with the 2005 SAA annual conference expenses.
