WRIGHT STATE RUGBY
Fall Season 2008
The Fall rugby season has officially drawn to a close. The Men's side closed their season with a disappointing Semifinal loss to Ohio Northern University. In a game marred by turnovers and sub-par fundamental play, ONU Black Rose rugby punched in a try in the final minutes of the game to steal a heart breaker from the Raiders. Final score: 24-23. Playoff loss aside, the Men's team look to have a great deal of success in the Spring season as they are still a young team and will be returning the majority of their players.
The Women's team looked to fulfill the promise they displayed during the regular season as they started their playoff run with a three hour journey north to play Oberlin on their home field. The trip proved worthwhile as the ladies proved themselves worthy to make WSU's first state final rugby appearance. With the weather finally starting to resemble Fall, the WSU ladies once again hit the road and traveled to play their bitter rival, the Wittenberg Mudpigs. Having already played (and beaten) the mudpigs once this season, this would shape up to be a highly physical game. The women rose to the challenge and made it quite clear they were deserving of the State Champion title, running away with the game in the second half and securing a 22-7 victory and the state title.
Both Men's and Women's sides will be recruiting for the Spring season. Winter conditioning will start after the New Year. Specific dates, times and location will be listed here when they are decided so if you're interested in playing, check back over break.
